PLAYERS, FIELD & EQUIPMENT

Section #1: Team

  • Art.1:   Teams will be made up of 8-12 players. A minimum of 8 players will compete on a side; others will be available as substations.
  • Art.2: Coed teams must start all games with no more male players than female.
  • Art.3: Substitutes may enter the game only in case of injury. Coed may not substitute male for female.
  • Art 4: A game forfeit occurs when a team fails to show up or fails to field 5 players to begin a game.
  • Art 5: A match forfeit occurs when a team forfeits the first four games. At that point, the winning team acquires all 9 points for the match.

Section#2: Boundaries

  • Art.1: During play all players must remain in boundary lines.
  • Art 2: Players may pass through their end line or sideline only to retrieve stray balls. A stray ball is one that has not been picked up and is lying on the ground.
  • Art 3: When retrieving a ball, the player must immediately re-enter the playing area. Note: A player not immediately re-entering the playing area may be declared out.
  • Art 4: A player may be handed a ball, provided the player receiving the ball remains within their team’s field boundaries. Players may hand a ball off while standing out of bounds.
  • Art 5: A player shall not:
    • A.    Leave the playing field to avoid being hit or catch a ball.
    • B.    Have any part of their body touch the 3 foot dead zone in the center of the field. Except during the opening rush

Section #3:  Equipment

  • Art 1: The official ball used in tournament and league play will be a 9 inch rubber playground ball.
  • Art 2: The standard number of balls for a 16 player game is 6.
  • Art 3: Participants must wear shoes suitable for indoor play.
  • Art 4: Participants must wear shirts and shorts/pants.
  • Art 5: Sweatbands are allowed only on head. No wristbands.
  • Art 6: No jewelry of any kind is allowed on the court.

GAME PLAY

Section #1: The Game

  • Art 1: Teams will alternate sides after each match.
  • Art 2: The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them out.

            An out is scored by:

    • A.    Hitting an opposing player with a live thrown ball below the shoulders. Note: If a player ducks, and this is clearly the reason for being hit above the shoulders, the player is out.
    • B.    Catching a live ball thrown by an opponent. Note: When a ball is caught by the opposing team the thrower is out and the catching team has a player return to the game on a “first out first in” basis.
    • C.    Causing an opponent to drop a ball as a result of contact by another thrown live ball. (usually occurs when a ball is used to block a thrown ball.)
    • D.    A player steps out of bounds.
  • Art 3: A player may block a thrown ball with a ball being held, provided the held ball is not             dropped as a result of the contact with the thrown ball.

Section #2: Timing

  • Art 1: Each game will have a 3 minute time limit.
  • Art 2: A match will consist of 7 games in a 30 minute time span. The team that wins 4 games will be declared the winner of the match.
  • Art 3: Each team will play 2 matches per night.

Section #3: Beginning the game

  • Art 1: Each player on each team will start with one hand on the glass at their end of the rink.
  • Art 2: An official will signal the start of each game.

Section #4: Declaring a Winner

  • Art 1: The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner.
  • Art 2: If neither team has been eliminated at the end of regulation, the team with the greater number of remaining players will be declared the winner.

Section # 5: Overtime Play

  • Art 1: If an equal number of players remain after regulation play, a sudden death overtime period will be played.
  • Art 2: Each team will choose 4 players to play in overtime.
  • Art 3: All overtime periods begin with an equal number of “balls in hand” behind a team’s end line. The first team to eliminate any one opposing player will be declared the winner.

Section #6: Stalling and the 5 second violation

The following will be used to prevent overtime.

  •  Art 1: A team trailing during a regulation game must be given the opportunity to eliminate an opposing player. This requires a ball to be at the disposal of the trailing team.
  • Art 2: Once a player has gained control of a ball and is not dodging a ball being thrown at them, then this player has to make a play with their ball within 5 seconds. If a player does not play the ball in an appropriate amount of time, the official may declare this a stall in play and the player will be eliminated from the game,

OFFICIALS' DUTIES

Section # 1: Enforcement

  • Art 1: All contests will be supervised by a Court Monitor.
  • Art 2: Rules will be enforced primarily by the honor system. Players will be expected to rule whether or not a hit was legal or they were legally eliminated.
  • Art 3: Court monitors may tell players they have been eliminated from the game if a player does not leave after being struck by a ball. If a player steps on the line the Court Monitor will tell them they have been eliminated.
  • Art 4: Court monitors may warn players and call technical fouls on those who display unsportsmanlike conduct. Any players receiving a technical foul in a game will be eliminated from that game. If the player has already been eliminated from a game they will be eliminated from the match. Severe infractions or multiple technicals may result in suspensions from matches.

Section #2: Unsportsmanlike conduct

• Art 1: May include, but is not limited to;

      1. Foul language
      2. Hits above the shoulders

  • Art 1: Protests will only be accepted in cases involving use of an ineligible player.
  • Art 2: Protests on judgement calls will not be accepted.

LEAGUE STANDINGS

Section #1: match scoring

  • Art 1: Matches will be decided using a best of 7 format. During round robin play all 7 games will be played regardless.
